Seasoned with SaltThinking about Life and DeathStatesmanshipConvictions, conscience, beliefs... These intangibles represent the bedrock of motivation for public service among true statesmen. They also form the core vocabulary of the sound bite. While Americans pay lip service to a desire for true statesmanship, they are so inebriated by the attraction of the thin mask of celebrity that they are unable to distinguish character from characters. This lack of discernment is leading us to widespread moral implosion. Peruse the following writings of current leaders. You may be surprised to discover the identity of the authors. "I am opposed to abortion and to government funding of abortions." "... my deep personal conviction that abortion is wrong." "Human life, even at its earliest stages, has a certain right which must be recognized--the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old." The authors, in order, are Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Edward Kennedy--probably the most powerful "pro-choice" politicians in America today. How did they get from point B (Better judgment) to point A (Abortion under all circumstances)? In the wake of the violent student uprising of the late 1960s and early 1970s, American leadership acceded to the demands of radicals who threatened major temper tantrums if "the establishment" would not begin to let them have their own way. The first sacrifice on the altar of appeasement was the unborn child. Later, these same radicals discarded their idealism and entered the race for money and power. A populace, numbed by years of feel-good preaching by the Church, succumbed to the desire for self-gratification, as lawless idealism entered the mainstream of political thinking. As the "moral majority" retreated, soul-sold politicians saw an opportunity for a new guard to emerge, uttering the mantra, "do your own thing." Today's liberal politicians emerged to receive the money and power conferred by former hippies, who learned to make money but failed to learn morality or good sense. The liberals are now in power, but because their policies are destructive, the liberals' downfall is assured. The question is, when their corrupt institutions come tumbling down, will there be sufficiently qualified statesmen to fill the vacuum, or will the entire nation be brought down? Therefore, it is imperative that people of faith and character do not give up hope, but continue to do what only they can do: Continue on in faith, raising families, and inculcating in their children the values that made our nation great. We must never succumb to the culture of death, but always promote life, in every way possible. We must take heart in the timeless words of Churchill:
