ABC: The Abortion-Breast Cancer Link

Suppose you were a pediatrician. A 45-year-old mother, who has undergone treatment for breast cancer, brings her 15-year-old daughter into your office. A routine test indicates that the daughter is pregnant, and the mother and daughter request a referral for an abortion. You are pro-choice. What is your response?

Let’s add more information to the scenario: As a professional who keeps up with the medical literature, you are aware that if this girl has an abortion, it is almost a certainty that when she is older she will get breast cancer. Now what is your response?

When Dr. Joel Brind, president of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, posed this question to the spring session of the American Academy of Pediatrics, one response was that such decisions were not to be made by physicians but by the patients. Another said that the risk of breast cancer had to be weighed against other factors, such as "whether she will get a good job and a good education."

Although the ABC (Abortion-Breast Cancer) link was clearly established five years ago, medical professionals have been slow to incorporate the implications into their practice of medicine. Here we are not talking about fanatical feminist groups; we are not talking about greasy politicians; we are not talking about liberal activist judges; we are talking about the nation’s doctors. How deeply the culture of death has undermined our society, that the group that is responsible for protecting the nation’s health has largely ignored an important finding that is implicated in some 5,000 cases of breast cancer every year!

What can we do?

First of all, we ought always to be ready to provide assistance if we hear of anyone--man or woman--contemplating aborting a baby, including the telephone number of the local crisis pregnancy center. We are concerned with the welfare of the mother, the father, and the baby, but of these the baby is the most vulnerable, having no legal or physical protection. Especially if we know that there is a history of breast cancer in the mother’s family, we can suggest that they become aware of the risks to the health of the mother. Secondly, we can ask the family or pediatric physicians whom we patronize if they are aware of the ABC link, having the information ready to supply them, perhaps from Dr. Brind’s web site. We can tell them that the question of whether they are philosophically pro-life or pro-choice is irrelevant, since it is the health of the patient (the mother) that is at stake.

Thirdly, we can volunteer and/or financially support our local crisis pregnancy center. There are few more rewarding local activities in which we can be involved.

Fourthly, we can take the information we have and disseminate it as widely as possible. Encourage people to visit this web site and read this article. Write letters to the editor of our local newspapers.

Lastly, we can pray that God will remove the scourge of abortion from our nation. If you or someone you know has had an abortion, post-abortion counseling is available at most crisis pregnancy centers. More imporantly, forgiveness and healing are available in the name of Jesus.
